She arrives back at her Houston home, before 3pm. Her oldest son, whom they call, Man, greets her in the kitchen. She sees no signs of her husband. Not at first.
“Hey, my mommy,” her 2 year old and oldest son, Derrick Jr says, with a suspicious smile on his face. “Hey, man. What are you up too?” she asks, knowing
his aptness for getting into mischief.
She is absolutely correct, as she’ll soon discover.
“I not do nothing,” he says in his cutest baby voice, as
he quickly tries to plead his case.
But he’s looking guilty. He’s covered from head to toe, in flour
and chocolate syrup. Amongst other things. Baby Girl goes
around the kitchen island to see if she can find the source of
the concoction that’s pasted to her 1st born. There is a mixture
of sugar, Froot Loops, flour, raw eggs and chocolate syrup, all
over the floor, in front of the refrigerator.
“Man? What did you do, son?” she asks in disgust.
She puts the entrée from Olive Garden in the fridge. Young D
will eat it, sooner or later. Then she heads to the cleaning closet to get her mop, the bucket and some cleaners. So she could get the mess cleaned up.
“Come on, son,” she says with a smile. “You’re gonna help
mommy clean up this mess, you made. Okay?”
“But I-I shry cook da eggs,” Lil Man says as he’s
pleading his case.
“Well, you’re not cooking them, baby. Not on mommy’s
floor,” Baby Girl says as she smiles again.
“I cook you da cake, mommy,” he tries.
“You’re cooking mommy a cake?” she asks, in a voice
which says she’s impressed with his thoughts.
“Yes ma’am!” he says as he smiles, with chocolate syrup
on his cute little nose.
“Oh. Thank you, baby,” she says, “And now. Can you
help mommy clean up the floor, please? Where’s daddy?” “Him sheeping,” Lil Man tries.
“He’s sleeping in and you’re cooking lunch, ha? Well,
we need to be at the manor. So misses Addie Mae can help you
with your meal,” she says and laughs at her son.
She starts cleaning up the mess. Young D, who was awaken by
their laughter, now comes into the kitchen.
“Oh shit,” he says, after seeing the mess.
“Daddy, you can’t go back to bed with a two year old in
the house,” Baby Girl says to him, as she smiles and kisses him.
Young D stretches and tries to awake himself, fully, to take in
the mess on the floor.
He laughs and asks, “What was he trying to do, in here?” “It’s not funny, Derrick,” Baby Girl says, “Our son was
making eggs and a cake, for me.”
She can’t help but laugh too. They’re both laughing while
using their hands to try and hide their faces. But now, seeing
that his parents are laughing. Derrick Jr takes this as his
opportunity to strut his stuff. He’s proud of his mess, now. “I cook cake,” he says, over and over, as he struts
around the kitchen.
“Well, if his mama wasn’t off killing up folks-” “What?” Baby Girl asks as she instantly fires back at
Young D. “Is my place in the home, now? Ha. daddy?” “I’m
